The Most Useful 20 Self Care Travel Tips

If you have been reading this Self Care Blog, then you know how traveling can be good for you.  Research has shown that traveling boosts satisfaction and happiness. From planning a trip, to enjoying the adventure, traveling can make you healthy. In one study, women who went on vacation at least twice a year show a lower risk of suffering a heart attack.

As you read this, on Saturday, I have or will be visiting my family in northern California, introducing them to my fiance as our wedding comes in October. There's anxiety and excitement.  There's also flying. If you're like me, and you don't like flying, I've researched and compiled the most useful 20 Self Care Travel Tips. *Please Note that I will receive a small compensation for the some of the items listed below at no cost to you.

1. Lotion up before you get on that flight! Dry air circulating in the plane will cause your skin to dry out.

2. Grab an empty water bottle. After security check in, fill it up at the nearest water fountain to maintain that hydration. If you're lucky, your hotel may have a water cooler.

3. Bring those noise canceling headphones to help minimize the cabin's pressure sound, babies, and random listening in on people's conversations. Just make sure to do this once you're fully in the air and not during important announcements.

4. Wear double socks or thick wool socks to help with feeling comfortable to prevent cold feet.

5. Don't forget that lip balm.

6. Body wipes (if you can't fit the whole package, or want to save room, place some in a gallon size zip lock)

7. Emergen-C or vitamins to help protect you against those who are possibly sick on the plane and the considerable amount of germs you will be exposed to; ask for a water and you got yourself a little vitamin tonic.

8. Your self-care journal. Log in your thoughts, lists, record everything like sights and sounds. Things that make you laugh or make you irritable. You're record will solidify the great time and "oh yeah! that happened" moments.

9. Snacks. Bring some nuts, fruit, cheese & crackers, sandwiches, boiled eggs. You'll need something instead of salty pretzels to keep you satiated until you have your real meal at your destination.

10. The Happiness Podcast says it's SO WORTH IT to get the Pre TSA checked; the couple of hours in line and paperwork will be well paid off every time you travel; even after a couple of flights, the security clearance has paid for itself!

11. Put alarm on your calendar if you have to check in to your flight.

12. Set timers every 30 mins at the very least to stretch, stand, or move your feet if you can't get out of your seat (do a little happy dance).

13. Take a picture of your car or check google maps to pin where you park before you head to that airport!

14. Bring a jacket even if you don't feel like you'll be cold; it can serve as a pillow in a pinch. Or if sudden weather pattern changes your destination you have something.

15. Don't wear a belt, jewelry, or watch while in security. Leave them in your bag and wear them after you get through security.

16. Pack some essential oils.  A few drops on your hotel pillow helps you focus on your senses and not on your awareness of the hotel bed not being your bed.

17. Bring a insulated bottle, tea bag, and honey. Ask the flight attendant for hot water.

18. Sunglasses. Obvious but sometimes the last thing you remember.

19. If you're renting a car and in an unfamiliar location, don't forget to look at all street signs. "doh! we got a parking ticket due to street sweeping!

20. Smile, be kind to others, and to yourself. Traveling can be stressful but it doesn't have to be. Make your life and other's who work at the airport easier by being kind.

With this summer heat, you and your family may be bound to head somewhere cooler. Pull this up just before your big trip and remember to keep a mantra on hand during the most stressful, and anxious times like "everything will be alright" or "This too shall pass." Most importantly, your experience will not only help you feel better but also your family.
