The Never Ending Pursuit of Self-Care

Self Care Tips After the Holiday

It was 2 AM when we were driving back after two family holiday get-togethers. The slosh of our stomachs and the lipids almost sticking to every single part of our muscle fibers consumed us like zombies. He had to work immediately at 8am and the day was mine to mold. The most simplest answer to recover is to sleep in, wake up at your leisure, and lay low for the day. Self care can absolutely be how ever you make your day.

One secret I found that helped me stay on track was to work towards maintaining the same schedule. This can’t always happen but when it does, it works like magic. The idea of slamming that snooze button or say STFU Google alarm is seductive like the Sirens calling you to deep sleep. “Don’t worry you can sleep until you completely ready to see the world.”

The problem is that if you oversleep often, you may have hypersomnia, a medical condition that often relates to mental illness or a medical concern like sleep apnea which can lead to difficulty focusing in the day, tiredness, and grogginess. If it’s a one time thing, this is normal, but a consistent thing, may be something to ask your doctor and/or mental health professional about.

If you have a regular schedule on your off day that includes running errands, cleaning the house, doing laundry, etc, work that strength to break free from the warm surrounding blankets, and step on your right foot. Zen Habits by Babauta says plan and organize your day the first thing in the morning. “The reason I like having a morning routine is that not only does it instill a sense of purpose, peace and ritual to my day, but it ensures that I’m getting certain things done every morning … namely, my goals.”

You will find your productivity will increase by at least 50% because you have set goals, either wrote them down like a whiteboard, on your phone, so that you are accountable. You are also more likely to get things completed.

Another secret after a holiday feast is to work on your GI/digestive track immediately. Hydrate, take/drink a probiotic, and eat a salad as your first meal. Trust me, the comfort food was something I wanted to enjoy immediately the next day, but your body will thank you when you eat foliage that will bring the bad stuff out of your body. As far as dieting, one success I have found is intermittent fasting which you can check here more information about. Intermittent fasting began as a trial but for over 6 months, I have nicely and slowly lost weight on top of my yoga and walking routine.

Then, as my motto has always been, frontload everything (make everything as convenient) as much as possible. If you keep your Saturdays free, and your Sundays for errands, try reversing them. Get all your things for the week ready on Saturday. If that means, meal planning, grocery shopping, laundry, cleaning, washing the car, then do all that Saturday, leaving Sunday a pure pleasure, feet-up-on-couch, day vacation, relaxation center for you and your family.
